Red Rock Canyon day trip: entry, transport and tour planning
Do I need a timed-entry reservation?
The BLM requires Scenic Drive timed entry October 1–May 31 for entry from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. A reservation and the entry fee are separate requirements. This applies to the Scenic Drive; use the BLM’s current planning page for access conditions and exceptions rather than assuming every trailhead follows the same procedure.
Decide whether you want a scenic drive, time on a trail, or a guided visit. Those are different outings, with different transport and preparation needs.

Check the Scenic Drive reservation rule
The Bureau of Land Management states that timed-entry reservations are required for Scenic Drive entry between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., October 1 through May 31. The Scenic Drive is a one-way, 13-mile road. Check current access conditions and charges before you travel; a reservation and admission are separate things to verify.

Choose independent transport or a tour
For an independent visit, arrange both the outward trip and the return before leaving Las Vegas. Do not assume an on-demand pickup will be available at the end of a trail. For a guided visit, ask the operator for the exact route, pickup point, expected time away from the hotel and walking requirements. “Red Rock tour” alone does not tell you whether the outing enters the Scenic Drive or includes a hike.
Questions to ask before booking a tour
- Does the stated price include the park entry arrangements and any required reservation? Who is responsible for obtaining them?
- Is pickup at your hotel, a nearby meeting point or another location? What happens if you miss that pickup?
- How much walking is involved, on what surface, and what accessibility arrangements are available?
- Are water, food, equipment or gratuities included or separate? What should you bring yourself?
- What is the weather cancellation policy, and how are refunds or alternative dates handled?
Give the landscape time
Do not use the drive itself as the entire trip budget. Add time for your chosen stops, walking, preparation and the return journey. If you have a show or conference commitment that evening, choose an outing that leaves a realistic buffer. A route suitable for a sightseeing stop may not be a suitable hiking plan.
Prepare for conditions, not the hotel forecast
BLM advises checking weather, bringing water and planning recreation around your ability; mobile coverage can be unreliable. Review the park’s current guidance and alerts rather than relying on this planning article for real-time conditions. Keep your chosen route with you and tell someone your plan. We do not sell tours or claim an operator endorsement: confirm the itinerary directly with the operator you choose.
